INVENTION CONVENTION
The students completed the Invention Convention this week. They came up with an idea, created a model of the invention, completed a display board with details of the product (the original problem, how this product solves the problem, a diagram, and pictures), and created a radio or TV advertisement. The projects were presented individually to the classmates in the days before the convention.
The Invention Convention was open for all other grade levels to visit in the afternoon, as well as staff members, parents, and other visitors. The tables were set up with the inventions and display boards. The students were available to explain their invention and answer questions. Here are a few pictures from that event (click for a larger view).

GRANDPARENTS DAY
We kicked off the Invention Convention with our Grandparents Day event this year. We had nearly 200 guests attend, including grandparents, aunts and uncles, parents, and other important family members! (Even more visited throughout the rest of the day.) We started the program by showing the video below, in which students created video clips answering questions about their grandparents. We consolidated the clips into one video. The students also showed their visitors a "Grandparent Narrative" writing posted on the wall, where they were asked to write a story about their grandparents. The visitors were also shown the invention projects and were encouraged to talk to other students about their projects. Afterwards, students and visitors were able to enjoy refreshments.
After the visitors left, the students helped put the chairs away. Then a group of students helped the teachers and PTA parent volunteers rearrange the tables to better accommodate the other grade levels touring in the afternoon.
Pictures of the Grandparents Day portion of our day are included below.
