This week we will be concentrating on calculating volume using displacement of water. On Friday we started learning the different types of graduated cylinders and how to read the measurements. The first activity was on paper, and the next activity on Monday will allow the students to use the cylinders. This lesson leads into the final displacement lesson where they will need to read the measurement on the cylinder, add the object, read the final measurement, and find the difference.
After they have shown mastery of this skill, they will be combining multiple lessons into one activity. They will find the mass of an object, and the volume of an object, and then break it apart. They will find the mass and volume again to see how they compare the the initial measurements.
This will lead into the final section of this science unit: density. We will begin practicing how to calculate density this week with numbers before we use objects and weights.
