Our first unit in math is Multiplication. By the end of this section, students will be expected to:
These skills are the foundation of fifth grade math. It is critical that students know the basic multiplication facts through the 12s. Division is the next unit, which will use these same skills.
Students are allowed to use a variety of strategies to solve these problems. Below are some of the most common strategies. We use the Traditional (Standard) Algorithm, Partial Products, and Splitting the most, but the others are still great for mental math strategies and for general practice with numbers.
- Use the Properties of Multiplication to solve problems
- (Zero, Identity, Associative, Commutative, Distributive)
- Multiply a one-digit number by up to a four-digit number (6 x 8793)
- Multiply a two-digit number by a three digit number (34 x 964)
- Multiply any number by a multiple of 10 or 100 (5 x 300 or 40 x 60)
- Evaluate equations involving parentheses or brackets using the properties of multiplication. (Zero, Identity, Associative, Commutative, Distributive)
