In this unit, we are converting measurements within the Customary (U.S.) system. There are three areas of focus:
Length - inches, feet, yards, miles
Capacity - fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, gallons
Weight - ounces, pounds, tons
Students must be able to convert measurements within each area. Some of them may be multiple steps, such as inches to yards, or gallons to cups. The fifth grade standard is actually stated as
"5.M.1: Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system, and use these conversions in solving multi-step real-world problems." This means that students will be assessed on their ability to solve word problems using measurement conversions. The assessment will NOT contain a section for straightforward conversions (such as 5 yd = _ in". It will consist only of word problems. We have been doing them every day in class, both for a warm-up and for practicing conversions, and I have examples below.
Also in the examples below is a visual that the students use for capacity conversions. Your child can probably explain it to you well if you don't understand it at first! The large "G" stands for Gallons. The 4 Q's inside represents 4 quarts in each gallon. The 2 P's inside each Q represent 2 pins in a quart, and the 2 C's represent 2 cups in each pint.
Finally, I have the reference sheet that students are given for the end-of-year state assessment shown below. Only the section in the RED BOX will be related to this assessment. They WILL be allowed to use the reference sheet on the assessment. They have each been given their own copy to keep.
