Our field trip to the Evansville African American Museum and the Evansville Planetarium was wonderful!
At the African American Museum, students learned about Evansville's history starting around the time of the Civil War up through the 1930s, and then the major changes during the 1950s and 1960s, especially with the high schools. A focus of the museum was an apartment from the 1930s still intact within the building and set up with artifacts from the time period. A room upstairs int he museum has a large area with artifacts from the high schools during the time of segregation in Evansville, especially with regards to basketball teams. Lincoln School is the focus.
At the Planetarium, we watched the Skies Over Evansville show. It was amazing! They have lots of shows to choose from, but this one was perfect for what we had studied in class about the Sun, the Moon, constellations, and rotation of the Earth. The students seemed to really enjoy the atmosphere and the information from the presenter, Mitch Lumen. I would definitely recommend visiting both of these places with your family when you have time!
