We watched a short intro video on gliders. Then the students were given one index card, one straw, and masking tape and given the task of making their own.
The students watched the original Tootsie Roll Pops commercial with the essential question: "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop?" We discussed this question as a class, and tried to view this from an experimental viewpoint. What were the variables? What would make this difficult to test? How do we know when we're at the center? How will we keep track of the licks? Then...we tested!
The class did an activity that included communicating without speaking- which is very difficult for 27-30 kids at one time! They had to put themselves in order according to a specific guideline. The first was in order of height, the second was in order of the length of their first name, and the third was by birthday. Here are a few pictures:
The students learned how to make stop-motion videos this year. Here are some pictures of their first day working: Below are a few examples of the videos that the students made: We planned to take a class photo on the first day of school, but the rain changed our plans! Instead, we took one on the second day. This is just the start of many throughout the year!
