Considering our science standards require that students be able to identify the patterns in the length and direction of their shadows, and record that data over a period of time in a chart to analyze, I decided that it would be a good time to learn how to use a compass! It's a bonus that we also have been learning about cardinal directions in Social Studies! Here are a few pictures of the day the compasses arrived. I also bought bracelets to use with the compasses to reduce the number of compasses dropped and stepped on during our outside activities.
In addition to the compasses, the students were taking each others' heights so that we can compare their height to their shadow's length at various times.
*Disclaimer: some students were engineering a solution to the fact that the bracelet was small for a few students in each class. They were trying to figure out a non-permanent, simple, effective solution for their classmates!
