The students had their first attempt at making spaghetti towers today. They were given 20 sticks of spaghetti and 1 marshmallow, and were given the task of making the tallest tower they could in 10 minutes. The tower had to stand on its own at the end to be measured.
By the way- do you know how hard it is to give a kid a marshmallow and expect them NOT to eat it?? But don't worry...after clean-up, they were given one!
We will do this activity a few times throughout the year. It's intriguing to watch how they improve int heir designs, planning, and communication with each other. The first time is very unorganized and impulsive for most groups, but they learn from it and make improvements as they get more attempts. Here are some pictures from this first time:
